Black Ballet History Month!...Balletist Of The Week!..."The Queen Mother Of Black Dance!"...Katherine Dunham!

Yes!...Black Ballet History...

is 'So Scintillating!'

We now remember, and say the name...

...Katherine Dunham!.

When people heard that the Mysterious

and Entertaining "Katherine the Great"

was coming to town, they would scramble

over each other to get a seat and there

would always be overflow crowds!

Her status as a Foundational Ballet

Pioneer is indebatable! She is still the

leader in the field of ethnochoreography!

With her own dance company, the

Katherine Dunham Dance Company,

which was one of the most successful

of the 20th century, she earned the

accolade, "The Matriarch of Black

Dance!" As a social activist,

choreographer, and balletist,

she also pursued a

master's degree in anthropology.

The Dunham Technique

she invented is a new method of

movement that came out of her

expertise gained through

choreographing over ninety individual

dances. Katherine has several cultural

monuments the world over celebrating

her absolutely-marvelous contributions!

"I Gladly Kiss Her Ring!"
